46 States Approved for Summer P-EBT 2023

As of August 9th, 46 states and territories have been approved to issue Summer P-EBT benefits for 2023. The Summer P-EBT Program is part of the U.S. government response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Summer P-EBT 2023 provides households with eligible school children nutrition assistance benefits – similar to food stamps. P-EBT benefits are loaded onto EBT Cards and can be used to buy eligible food items.

Summer P-EBT for 2023

Children who receive free or reduced-price meals under the National School Lunch Act are eligible to receive P-EBT benefits.

P-EBT also provides benefits to younger children in households participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) whose covered child care facility is operating with reduced hours or attendance.

On Jan. 30, 2023, the Biden Administration announced that the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) declaration will end on May 11, 2023.

As a result, children under 6 in households participating in SNAP will not be eligible for summer 2023 P-EBT benefits.

However, school children who attended an NSLP-participating school at the end of school year 2022-23 will still be eligible for summer 2023 P-EBT benefits.

Additionally, all P-EBT benefits, for both the school year and the summer, must be distributed by September 30, 2023.

P-EBT Summer 2023 Eligibility

Households with eligible school children will receive P-EBT benefits for Summer 2023.

The following school children are eligible for PEBT benefits:

School children who attended a National School Lunch Program (NSLP) participating school at the during school year 2022 – 2023 and qualified to receive free or reduced price school meals.

This includes:

School children who attended a school that participated in the Community Eligibility Provision or Special Provisions 2 or 3 in school year 2022 – 2023.

Children who were directly certified for free school meals or who were certified by application for free or reduced price school meals during school year 2022 – 2023.

School children who attended a National School Lunch Program participating school at the end of school year 2022 – 2023 and are determined newly eligible for free or reduced price school meals.

Children in schools or school districts that have been newly approved to begin operating under the Community Eligibility Provision or under Provisions 2 or 3 in school year 2022 – 2023 are only eligible for Summer P-EBT 2023 benefits if they are determined income eligible or eligible for free or reduced school meals.

The American Samoa has been approved to issue $1.9 Million in P-EBT Benefits to 14,050 school children during Summer 2023.

Arizona has been approved to issue $66 Million in P-EBT Benefits to 550,000 school children during Summer 2023.
