Income Guidelines

Of all the guidelines, the income qualification is probably the most important. That is because the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) wants to make sure that you actually need food assistance and the best way to review that is to look at your income, both gross income and net income and the number of people in your household. The gross income guideline is below. As you can see, it is based on how many people you have in your household.

After you meet the gross income guideline, you now have to determine if you meet the net income criteria. Net income is determined by subtracting allowable deductions from the gross income to arrive at the net income for the household. You will see below the net income table and allowable deductions.

Step 3

Interview

After you successfully submit your application, you will be invited for an in-person interview with a CDSS care worker. The case worker’s job is to review your application to make sure it is complete and that you indeed meet all the criteria for food assistance. In the letter that is mailed to you inviting you for the interview, there may be instructions in there on what to bring to the interview. If your application is missing some documents, you will be asked to bring them to the interview. Be sure to bring any documents that are requested so that you don’t delay your application any further.

Step 4

Receive Your EBT Card

If your interview is successful and your application is approved, you will be issued an EBT Card. EBT Card works like a bank debit card. Each month, your food stamps benefit allocation will be deposited into your EBT Card account. You can then use the card to buy food at approved locations. You have to make sure you are always using your card to buy food that is approved on the list. It is illegal to buy food that is not on the list or give your card to someone else or sell your card. These offenses could land you in jail.
