Can You Use Food Stamps on Amazon?

You can now use food stamps on Amazon and that’s great news for all SNAP benefit holders who have been wanting to use their EBT Cards online to buy food at FreshDirect and other grocers that deliver food.

"Can You Use Food Stamps on Amazon?"

Starting in the summer of 2017, seven online food retailers, will start accepting food stamps and allow EBT Card holders to buy food online. Here is the list of the retailers approved for the program:

Amazon.com
FreshDirect
Safeway
ShopRite
Hy-Vee
Hart’s Local Grocers
Dash’s Market.

This is a two-year pilot program that the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), which administers the Food Stamps program is testing. NOTE that only seven states have been approved to run the program. The Seven states are:

Maryland
New Jersey
New York
Pennsylvania
Washington
Iowa
Oregon

"Can You Use Food Stamps on Amazon?"

If you are on food stamps but don’t live in the seven states mentioned above, you will not have to wait too long to be able to benefit from the program. The USDA says it hopes to expand the online program nationally and add more retailers.

The ability to use food stamps on Amazon and fresh direct in itself is a major breakthrough for millions of people who are on food stamps but don’t have access to quality, nutritious and affordable food. The fact that major retailers like Amazon are participating in SNAP’s online ordering program is a big deal. The ability to buy food online using food stamps could especially help those who live in food deserts (i.e. neighborhoods without access to fresh produce), those with disabilities, and the elderly. It will also expand options for people to get access to a variety of food options that may not necessarily be available to them in their local area due to limitations that they may have – either due to employment or distance.

Donald Trump on Welfare Reform

Many people want to know if Donald Trump wins the election, will he get rid of food stamps? Well, he won. So, what is he going to do? Will he make cuts to social security or worse privatize it? Will he cut welfare programs? How about Medicaid, Medicare, WIC, TANF, Energy Assistance? What can we discern from Donald Trump on Welfare Reform? Here are a few answers:

Donald Trump on Welfare Reform

Now that he is going to be the President of the United States, here is what we know: We are going to go through the most popular and expensive programs (Social Security and Food Stamps) and tell you what we know so far:

Food Stamps

There is a famous video of Donald Trump confronting a food stamps heckler. Watch it here. Even though that video has gained notoriety, it does not tell you what he plans to do about it. It only shows you that Donald Trump thinks too many people are on food stamps. What we know is that House Speaker Paul Ryan has been wanting to trim the program for a long time, and now that they don’t have a Democratic President in the way, they have a chance to do that. For example, they want to tighten eligibility standards or increase the work requirement, according to this article from CBS News.

Social Security

Trump has not presented a specific plan on social security, only saying that he will not take benefits from those who are currently receiving it. That opens the possibility that there would be changes to those who will get it in the future. And by the look of his transition team, it looks like privatizing social security may also be on the table since there are people on his transition team that are champions of privatizing social security.

Here is Trump answering a question from someone from the AARP on Social Security in December 2015.

What are your thoughts? Do you believe him?

Here is Trump during the Third Presidential Debate answering a question on Social Security

What do you think of his answer?

What do you think of Donald Trump on Welfare Reform? Do you think he is going to make deep cuts, eliminate programs or leave them alone. Tell us in the comments section below. We would love to hear from you on this important topic.

Donald Trump Food Stamps Video

Donald Trump has had a lot to say about government programs, especially his desire to cut these programs because he thinks they are bloated. But there is a famous video that everyone is talking about where Donald Trump famously confronts a food stamps heckler. It was November 18, 2015, at a rally in Worcester, Massachusetts. Donald Trump was commenting about how 50 million Americans live in poverty and that close to 50 million are on food stamps. That’s when a heckler interrupted Trump in what has become the “Donald Trump Food Stamps Video”. Here is what Trump had to say about that:

“I mention food stamps and that guy who is seriously overweight went crazy.”

The heckler was eventually thrown out of a Donald Trump rally. The video gained notoriety for two reasons: First, the number of people Trump claimed are on food stamps. Most people were surprised to hear that 47 million people are on food stamps but as of 2013, that number is correct and in 2016, that number stands at 43 million. If that sounds like a lot, there is a reason why. During the 2008 recession, a lot of people because of long term unemployed and went on food stamps. Even though the economy has recovered, wages are still depressed, so even people with jobs find themselves needing help to buy food. That’s why the number is still so high.

The other reason the video is so popular is just Trump’s response. It’s classic Trump, confronting anyone that gets in his way, which of course pleases some of his followers. See the entire video below and tell us what you think in the comments section below.

What can you buy with food stamps?

People on food stamps want to know – What can you buy with food stamps? Even though we have an entire post that shows the list of eligible food stamp items, we get lots of questions from our readers asking us if specific items are eligible to be purchased with EBT Card. We decided to put a list together of the most commonly asked items and provide answers. Here is the list of the 10 most commonly asked items people want to know if they can buy with their SNAP EBT Card:

"What can you buy with food stamps?"

What can you buy with food stamps EBT Card?

Can I buy diapers with EBT Card?

Even though nearly 30% of parents in the United States cannot afford diapers, which can cost up to $100 every month per baby, they are NOT covered by food stamps. That’s a heavy burden on some families since diapers form such a large part of the monthly budget for most household.

Can you buy baby formula with EBT Card?

Yes, you can purchase baby formula, including similac with your SNAP EBT card and there is actually no limit on how much formula you can buy. You can also purchase formula for your child even well beyond the 12 months of age.

Can you buy Energy Drinks like Red Bull with EBT Card?

Whether you can buy energy drinks with your EBT Card depends on the label on the product. If the energy drink has a Nutrition Facts label on it, then You Can purchase it using your EBT Card. This includes Monster, Zero Nos and Red Bull.

"What can you buy with food stamps"

Energy drinks that have a Supplement Facts label are classified by the FDA as supplements, and are therefore not eligible to be purchased using food stamps.

Can You Buy Coffee with EBT Card?

This is one of the most popular questions we get. That’s because coffee is such a central part of daily routines for a large part of the population so people want to know if they can purchase it with their EBT Card. Yes, you can buy packaged coffee, including instant coffee and K cups for Keurig. You can also buy creamer. However, you cannot buy hot coffee because you cannot use an EBT card to buy hot liquids.

Can You Buy Candy with EBT Card?

Somehow, Candy made the list of items you can buy with your SNAP EBT Card. With the little money that is allocated per individual/family for food stamps, you probably want to spend your money on buying nutritious food.

Can You Buy Steak and Seafood with EBT Card?

This is also another popular question. Yes, you can buy high-end steaks and even organic food with your EBT card. And yes, you can also buy lobster. Lobster is expensive, so we are curious why people on food stamps want to spend their previous food stamps dollars on buying lobster. But if you feel strongly about it, Yes, you can buy lobster with your EBT card as seafood from the grocery store. You can also purchase live fish such as lobsters and other shellfish with the EBT card.

Can You Buy Deli food with EBT Card?

You cannot buy hot food from the deli or prepared foods like mac n cheese, chicken or sandwiches, stuff from the salad bar or anything that is to be consumed at the premises. Essentially, any ready-to-eat food items are not allowed. You can, however, buy deli meats and cheeses and cold uncooked items from the deli with your EBT card.

Can You Buy rotisserie chicken with EBT Card?

You can buy an uncooked rotisserie chicken and prepare it yourself at home. You cannot buy the hot, prepared rotisserie chicken that is sold at the grocery store or places like Walmart, Costco or Wegmans.

Can You Buy Bakery Birthday or Special Occasion Cakes with EBT Card?

People are really surprised to hear this answer but you are allowed to buy birthday and other special occasion cakes with food stamps, as long as the value of non-edible decorations do not exceed 50 percent of the purchase price of the cake.

Can You Buy a Gift Basket with EBT Card?

Gift baskets that contain both food and non-food items are not eligible for purchase with SNAP benefits if the value of the non-food items exceeds 50 percent of the purchase price. For Example: A stuffed holiday bear sold with a small package of chocolate for $14.99 would not be eligible for SNAP purchase, but A gift basket consisting primarily of meats and cheeses or snack foods, and including a small toy — where the cost of the food items clearly accounts for more than 50% of the purchase price of the item — would be eligible for purchase with SNAP benefits.

In addition to the above items, you are also not allowed to use your EBT card to buy paper products, diapers, vitamins, beer, cigarettes or lottery tickets.
