Extra SNAP Food Stamps for 2024

The federally-funded extra food stamps, also known as the Emergency Allotment Program was launched during the pandemic to support households during the COVID-19 outbreak. This program provided help to millions of households by increasing their monthly food stamp benefits to maximum amount for their household size. However, on March 1st 2023, the federal Emergency Allotment Program expired for all SNAP recipients nationwide. This change to SNAP returned all benefits to pre-pandemic normals for food stamp households. Changes to SNAP Benefits 2021-2023As a result, the decrease in monthly food stamp benefits has caused SNAP households to experience financial distress when it comes to affording food for their household. The decrease in benefits paired with the rising cost of food due to inflation has put increased financial strain on households receiving food stamps. Fortunately, some states are taking action to address the increased financial strain on SNAP households. Select states have opted to provide extra SNAP food stamps for 2024. For example, New Jersey is providing additional benefits to SNAP households by raising the monthly minimum benefit amount. This change to New Jersey food stamps helps to alleviate the financial strain on SNAP households. Below is a list of the states offering extra SNAP EBT benefits to food stamp recipients for 2024.

District of Columbia

Washington, D.C. SNAP recipients can expect to receive a 10% increase in their monthly food stamp benefits in 2024. The District of Columbia food stamps increase will take effect on January 1, 2024 and run through September 30, 2024. This change comes as a result of the legislation passed called the Give SNAP a Raise Amendment Act of 2022. This increase will be equal to 10 percent of a household’s federal monthly allotment. District of Columbia council members are trying to make this increase to SNAP benefits permanent for D.C. food stamp recipients, but nothing is official at this time.  

New Jersey

New Jersey SNAP recipients will be receiving a minimum of $95 in monthly food stamp benefits throughout 2024. This means that if your monthly food stamp benefits are less than $95, you will receive the difference to ensure that you receive at least $95 in monthly SNAP benefits. With SNAP benefits set at a $23 per month minimum for fiscal year 2024, this guaranteed $95 minimum in monthly food stamp benefits is a huge help to New Jersey recipients. The Extra Food Stamps in New Jersey for 2024 is a state-funded program. This means that you will receive your regular federal SNAP benefit amount PLUS an additional state supplement that equals the $95 monthly minimum.

Currently, the District of Columbia and New Jersey are the only states that have announced that they will be issuing state-funded extra food stamps for 2024. Washington, D.C. Will other states be approved to issue extra Food Stamps for 2024?

As of November 29th, Washington D.C. and New Jersey are the only states to announce that they will be issuing extra food stamp benefits for 2024 through a state-funded program.

At this time, no additional states have announced that they will be issuing extra SNAP benefits. However, it is likely that other states such as California and New York will follow suit. We will update this article as more information is released.

How much are the Extra Food Stamp payments for 2024?

District of Columbia EBT Cardholders will receive a 10% increase in their total monthly food stamp benefits. New Jersey SNAP households will receive a minimum of $95 in total monthly food stamp benefits. If your monthly SNAP benefit payment is less than $95, you will receive an additional payment of extra food stamps to equal $95.

When will I receive my extra Food Stamps for 2024?

The extra food stamp payments for 2024 will be placed available on District of Columbia and New Jersey EBT Card on your scheduled Food Stamps deposit date.

When did the Emergency Allotment benefits end?

On March 1, 2023, the federal Emergency Allotment Program expired for all SNAP recipients nationwide.

The Pandemic Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as P-SNAP was implemented to help address temporary food needs caused by COVID-19. P-SNAP provided emergency allotment benefits to households based on size.

On March 1st 2023, all SNAP benefit amounts returned to pre-pandemic normals for food stamp households.

This change will caused recipients of all ages to lose their extra food stamp benefits after February 2023.

Families lost an average of $82 per person in extra benefits. That means a family of four lost an average of $328 in food stamp benefits each month.

However, the steepest loss was for seniors receiving SNAP benefits. Seniors receiving the minimum benefit amount lost $258 in monthly food stamp benefits. Their SNAP benefits fell from $281 a month to $23 a month.

Why did the Extra Food Stamp benefits end?

The extra food stamp benefits were a temporary increase in benefits to help low-income households deal with the hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Consolidated Appropriations Act passed by Congress ended emergency allotments after the February 2023 issuance. This means that on March 1st 2023, all SNAP households’ benefits returned to normal amounts, without the added supplement.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) adjusts the SNAP maximum allotments, standard deduction and income eligibility at the beginning of each fiscal year. The fiscal year begins on October 1st each year. The changes are based on the standard cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). As a result of the increase to the SNAP maximum allotment benefits, every food stamp recipient will see an increase in their monthly food stamp and EBT Card benefits. This includes the 48 states, District of Columbia, Alaska, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This increase will not impact SNAP recipients in Hawaii. Unfortunately, households currently receiving food stamp benefits in Hawaii will see a decrease in their SNAP benefit amount.
