Many major online retailers are now accepting Food Stamps as a form of payment. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients are now able to shop with food stamps online at food retailers such as Amazon, FreshDirect, Safeway, ShopRite, Hy-Vee, Hart’s Local Grocers and Dash’s Market. The goal of the online SNAP system is to bring the benefits of the online market to low-income Americans participating in food assistance program.
Starting this summer, the pilot program will take place in the following states:
- Maryland
- New Jersey
- New York
- Pennsylvania
- Washington
- Iowa
- Oregon
If the pilot program goes well, the USDA will add more retailers and make using food stamps online a national option. The online food stamps program could be extremely beneficial to those elderly or disable participating in SNAP.
