In this post we will outline a step-by-step guide on how to apply for food stamps in Utah online. Food stamps are a part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) that enables low income families with the ability to purchase eligible food items from authorized retailers. SNAP benefits are administered by the Utah Department of Workforce Services.
In order to be eligible for SNAP benefits in Utah, you must first meet certain income and asset threshold requirements. If you’re eligible to receive SNAP benefits in Utah, you’ll be issued an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, also known as a Horizon card. Your EBT Card can be used just like a debit card at participating grocery stores to purchase qualified food items. You can also use your Horizon Card to withdraw your benefits at ATMs throughout Utah. Your benefits are delivered to your EBT Card on the same day each month.
Eligibility for SNAP benefits are based on a variety of factors such as income, assets and the size of your household. To find out whether you qualify to receive Food Stamps, an eligibility specialist will add together your household’s countable income and then subtract certain deductions (i.e. child support, shelter costs, etc.). The income after deductions must fall below a certain dollar amount for your household to get Food Stamp benefits. To see if you qualify, refer to the Income Chart below:

Step 4 – Utah EBT Card
If you’ve made it to this step that means you’ve been approved to receive SNAP benefits in the state of Utah! You’ll be receiving your debit-like EBT card, also known as Horizon card in the mail. Your card is used exactly like a debit card at the point-of-sale terminals. Be sure to set up your 4-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) once your EBT card is received in the mail. Do not share this number with anyone.
Your benefits will be loaded to your card on the same day every month (including holidays and weekends). Your benefits can be used to redeem approved food items at participating retailers.
