The Alaska Food Stamp Program, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federally funded program that provides food benefits to low-income individuals and households. In Alaska, the Division of Public Assistance is responsible for mandating and issuing Food Stamp benefits via the Alaska Quest card. The amount of benefits a household receives each month depends on the household’s monthly income and household size. Food Stamp recipients can use their benefits to buy approved food products from authorized stores throughout Alaska.
Benefits are distributed through an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card. SNAP benefits can be used to purchase eligible food items for home consumption including seeds and plants which produce food for consumption by SNAP households. Farmers markets are available for SNAP benefits as well as eligible retailers. In addition to food assistance, the program provides SNAP recipients with nutrition education, employment and training, and work experience in some cases.
In order to be eligible to receive Food Stamp benefits in Alaska, you must first fall within a certain income threshold and pass an asset test. The gross monthly income threshold is based on 130% of the current Alaska poverty standard. If you’re currently not a recipient of Food Stamps and decide to apply, you will be invited to complete an in-person interview at your local Department of Health and Social Services office location.
