Indiana Food Stamps FAQs

Here are the most frequently asked questions about Food stamps benefits in Indiana.

Do I Qualify for Food Stamps?

To qualify for SNAP, applicants must meet both the financial and non-financial food stamps eligibility requirements.

Non-financial requirements include state residency, citizenship/alien status, work registration and cooperation with the IMPACT (job training) program.

Financial criteria include income and asset limits. For more on food stamps income and asset limits, click here.

Who must be included in a food stamps application?

There are people who live together that must be included in a food stamps application.

This includes married persons, children under age 22 who live with their parent(s)
and persons who eat together.

Other persons may not receive benefits such as ineligible aliens, students who do not meet certain criteria, persons who have previously been convicted of SNAP fraud.

What is the Income Limit for Indiana Food Stamps?

To be approved for SNAP benefits in Indiana, you have to meet two income limits: gross income and net income.

Gross income is your total income, before taxes or any deductions.

Net income is determined by subtracting certain allowable deductions from the gross income.

Below is the Indian food stamps income limit table.

Household Size Gross monthly income
(130 percent of poverty)
Net monthly income
(100 percent of poverty)
1 $1,354 $1,041
2 $1,832 $1,410
3 $2,311 $1,778
4 $2,790 $2,146
5 $3,269 $2,515
6 $3,748 $2,883
7 $4,227 $3,251
8 $4,705 $3,620
Each additional member ➕ $479 ➕ $369

Households with members who are elderly or disabled, as well as households that pass the gross income test, must also pass a net test to qualify.

Elderly households are those which contain members age 60 or older.

Disabled members are those who receive disability payments, such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI), veteran’s disability, or Medicaid as a blind or disabled individual.

When will I receive my food stamps benefits each month?

This table below shows the dates when food stamps benefits are deposited on a monthly basis.

It is based on the first letter of the recipient’s last name. The recipient is the person whose name appears on the front of the Hoosier Works (EBT) card.

If the First Letter of your Last Name is Benefits are deposited on the
A or B 5th of the month
C or D 7th of the month
E, F, or G 9th of the month
H or I 11th of the month
J, K, or L 13th of the month
M or N 15th of the month
O, P, Q, or R 17th of the month
S 19th of the month
T, U, or V 21st of the month
W, X, Y, or Z 23rd of the month

Where can I use food stamps?

Food stamps benefits are used like cash to buy eligible items at any store, supermarket, farmers market, or co-op approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Indiana uses an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) system to distribute SNAP benefits.

The Indiana EBT card, also called the Hoosier Works card is a plastic card that looks like a debit card or ATM cards.

It has a unique sixteen-digit account number, a magnetic stripe on the back and only works with a four-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) selected by the food stamps recipient.

Can I get emergency food stamps today?

When you submit an Indiana food stamps application, it is reviewed for expedited (or emergency) service.

This review is based on the information entered on the application.

If you want to be considered for emergency food stamps, it is important for you to fill out
the expedited questions on the application so you can be considered for this service.

If you qualify, you will be given an interview appointment for the same day or the following day.

After your interview, if it is determined that you qualify for expedited benefits, you will receive them by the seventh day after applying.

However, food stamps benefits are NEVER issued the same day an application is submitted.

To qualify for expedited benefits you must:

  • Have less than $150 in gross monthly income and liquid resources (cash/
checking/savings) of $100 or less in the month of the application.
  • Have monthly rent/mortgage and utilities that are more than your gross monthly income and liquid resources.

Are individuals with a drug felony eligible for food stamps?

Indiana passed a law (IC 12-14-30-3) that went into effect on January 1, 2020, that allows applicants with a drug-related felony to be considered for eligibility for food stamps.

However, if the individual is in violation of the terms of probation, parole, community corrections, reentry court, etc., the individual is not eligible for SNAP.
