EBT Online Purchasing Pilot Program

In 2017, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced a pilot program for online EBT purchases.

The program allows EBT Cardholders to purchase groceries online for delivery or pick-up.

On April 1st 2020, the USDA expanded their Online Purchasing Pilot for Alabama EBT Cardholders.

As a result, Alabama food stamp recipients can now use their EBT Card online to purchase groceries at select grocery merchants.

Below is a list of grocery stores that accept Alabama EBT online and participate in the USDA’s Online Purchasing Pilot.

We will describe in detail each grocery store’s online EBT program. In addition, we will also cover how you can place an order using your Alabama food stamps card and have it delivered to you.

Where Can I Use My Alabama EBT Card Online?

You can use your Alabama EBT Card to purchase groceries online including at Amazon, Walmart, and Wright’s Markets.

How to Buy Walmart Groceries Online with Alabama EBT Card

Walmart participates in the USDA’s Online Purchasing Pilot and allows those with EBT to purchase food online. Currently, Walmart only offers online grocery purchases with EBT for pick-up and not for delivery.

How it Works

To shop online for groceries with your Alabama EBT card, follow the instructions below.

Step 1 – Go to the Walmart Grocery website

The first step to purchase groceries online at Walmart is to go to the Walmart Grocery website at www.grocery.walmart.com.

Step 2 – Sign-In or Create your Account

Next, enter your zip code to find the Walmart store location near you. This is the location you will pick-up your online grocery order from.

Step 3 – Shop for Groceries Online

Once you have selected your Walmart location, begin shopping for grocery items online. Add EBT eligible items to your shopping cart.

Step 4 – Checkout with your EBT Card

When done shopping, proceed as usual to pay for your order online. When you get to payment, select EBT Card. Next, enter your Alabama EBT Card information. You must provide your EBT card number and PIN to complete checkout.

Please note, you can split your order with another payment method including a credit or debit card.

Step 5 – Pick-up your Groceries

When your order has been successfully placed, you will receive notification when your groceries are ready for pick-up. Please bring your Alabama EBT Card and ID with you to pick-up your online grocery order. 

Other States that Accept EBT Online at Walmart 

All Walmart grocery stores accept EBT cards as payment. However, if you are a New York, Oregon, Washington, Nebraska, or Iowa EBT cardholder, you can use your EBT card to purchase groceries online at Walmart. For more information, check out our post here

If you are a SNAP/EBT cardholder in another state, you can order your groceries online and pay with your EBT card at pick-up. At this time, you cannot use your EBT card to pay online.

How to Pay with EBT In-Person at Walmart

If you are an EBT Cardholder in another state, you shop online for free grocery pick-up and pay with your EBT Card in-person.

To pay for your pick-up grocery order at a participating Walmart store, select EBT at checkout. Similarly, you will be prompted to bring your EBT Card and ID with you to pay for your purchase at pick-up.

How to Buy Wright’s Market Groceries Online with Alabama EBT Card

Wright’s Market participates in the USDA’s Online Purchasing Pilot and allows Alabama EBT Cardholders to purchase food online. Currently, Wright’s Market offers both online grocery purchases with EBT for delivery or pick-up.

How it Works

To shop online for groceries with your Alabama EBT card, follow the instructions below.

Step 1 – Go to the Wright’s Market website

The first step to purchase groceries online at Wright’s Market is to go to their website at www.wrightsmarkets.com. For help, refer to the screenshot below.

Step 2 – Login or Create an Account

Next, you will want to login your Wright’s Market account by clicking the “Login” button on the right-side of the page. 

Step 3 – Shop for Groceries Online

Once you have logged in your account, begin shopping for grocery items online. Add EBT eligible items to your shopping cart.

Step 4 – Checkout with your EBT Card

When done shopping, proceed as usual to pay for your order online. When you get to payment, select EBT Card. Next, enter your Alabama EBT Card information. You must provide your EBT card number and PIN to complete checkout.

Step 5 – Schedule your Delivery

Before you place your order, be sure to schedule your grocery delivery date. Once your order has been successfully place, you will receive notification when your groceries will be delivered to you.

Please note, only eligible food may be purchased with SNAP benefits. This means that delivery fees and other associated charges may not be paid for with SNAP benefits. 

How to Buy Amazon Groceries Online with Alabama EBT Card

Amazon has been approved for the USDA’s Online Purchasing Pilot and has launched delivery for EBT Cardholders in select states. Cardholders in Alabama can use their EBT to shop and purchase food online for delivery.

How it Works

To shop online for groceries with your Alabama EBT card, follow the instructions below.

Step 1 – Login your Amazon account

The first step to purchase groceries online at Amazon is to go to the website and log into your Amazon account. To login, click here.

If you do not have an Amazon account, click on the “Create your Amazon account” as shown in the screenshot below.

Once you have created your account, proceed by entering your email and password to sign-in.

Step 2 – Add your Alabama EBT Card

Once logged in, enter your Alabama food stamps card to your Amazon account here. Type in your complete SNAP EBT card number and submit.

Next, enter your delivery zip code. This will tell you whether or not your zip code is eligible for delivery on purchases using your Nebraska EBT card. 

If eligible, click the “Add your SNAP EBT Card” button, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 3 – Shop for Amazon Groceries Online

When your EBT Card is added you can begin shopping for your groceries online. You can use Amazon Grocery, Amazon Fresh, or Amazon Grocery to purchase groceries online.

Step 4 – Enter your PIN to Checkout

When you are done shopping and are ready to checkout, proceed as usual. At checkout select “EBT” as payment. After that, enter your 4-digit PIN for your Alabama EBT Card to place your order.

What you can Buy Online with your Alabama EBT Card

You can use your Alabama EBT Card to buy eligible food stamps items. For instance, you can buy a variety of items that are sold to be eaten at home. This includes:

  • Beef and Poultry
  • Seafood and Fish
  • Snacks and Chips
  • Nonalcoholic beverages
  • Soft drinks and more

Additionally, you can also buy plants and seeds to grow food at home.

You cannot use your Alabama EBT card to buy groceries online that are considered hot or prepared food. Also, you cannot buy vitamins, medicine, or any other nonfood items.

When will I be able to purchase groceries from more stores online?

Can Alabama SNAP be used to pay for delivery?

Only eligible food items can be purchased with Alabama EBT benefits. Any delivery fees or charges may not be paid for with your SNAP benefits – you must use another form of payment.

How do I know what items are eligible to be purchased with EBT online?

When shopping online at Wright’s Market, Walmart and Amazon with your Alabama EBT card, eligible items will have a label in the product description. Look for a label that says “EBT and SNAP eligible” on products.

How much will I get on my EBT Card each month?

The amount of benefits you receive on your EBT Card each month is determined by your income and household size.

You can use the Maximum Monthly SNAP Amount Chart to find out the highest amount of benefits you can receive each month.

When are my Alabama EBT benefits deposited into my account?

Alabama EBT benefits are sent out from the 4th to the 23rd of every month. Your EBT deposit date is based on the last 2-digits of your case number.
