If you are applying for any kind of public assistance or benefit in Pennsylvania, you will have to go through the website. You can get complete instructions on how to apply for PA food assistance here or read below.

Apply for PA Food Stamps Online

The first step is to find out if you are eligible to apply. The biggest criteria you have to review is the income limits. Here is a chart showing the income eligibility criteria based on gross monthly income for your household and also income limits for households with an elderly person or disabled member.

Once you review this and are eligible, then you can follow the instructions below.

To apply, visit the COMPASS website. You will be asked to set up an account in order to submit your application. You will also be able to use this website to check the status of your application. Once you submit the application, you will be invited for an interview to review your application and also review supporting documentation on income, expenses and any exemptions you are claiming. You will be instructed on what to bring during the interview and you should make sure you bring all the documents requested so that your application is not delayed.

Once your application is approved, you will then be issued food stamps based on the number of people in your household. The higher the number of people, the more you get. You will be issued a debit card, called the EBT Card or ACCESS Card that allows you to buy food that is on the approved list. You have to make sure you don’t buy anything that is not approved, otherwise, you can lose your benefits forever.

We also tell you what you are going to need for your interview and what happens once you are approved for food stamps.

The PA food stamps program, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is administered by the state’s Department of Public Welfare. The agency provides food stamps for low-income families that are eligible.

Do I Qualify for PA Food Stamps?

To determine whether you qualify for PA food assistance, you have to review the eligibility guidelines. The image below shows the eligibility income guide.

"PA Food stamp eligibility guidelines"

If you meet those guidelines and are approved for food stamps, the amount you receive is based on the number of people in your household. Obviously, the more the people, the higher the benefit amount. The table below shows you who in your household may apply for food stamps and how much you will depend on the number of people you have in your family.

What Happens After I apply?

Once you apply for food stamps, you will be invited for an in-person interview. The purpose of this interview is to review your application and other supporting documentation and also understand your household situation and why you need food assistance. You will be asked to bring supporting documentation to the interview, including income and expense documentation. If you are approved, you will be issued a debit card called EBT card, which you will use to buy approved food at approved locations. It is important that you only use your EBT card to buy approved food items, otherwise, you may lose your benefits.

We are doing a food stamps review to show you how to apply for food stamps in Georgia. There are three ways you can apply for food assistance in Georgia. First, you have to see if you are eligible for SNAP benefits. Visit the Gateway website here. We think the Gateway website application process is very intuitive and easy to use. To see if you qualify, you will be able to use the online pre-screening tool that asks you questions about your household situation – including income, number of people in your family and other eligibility questions to determine if you are eligible for SNAP benefits or food stamps.

Once you complete the online application, you will be invited for an interview to review the information you provided and get documentation on your income and other expenses to be able to make a decision on your application. Once you are approved for food stamps, you will then be issued a Georgia EBT Card, which is a prepaid debit card which you will use to by food that is approved under the SNAP program. The EBT card can be used to make approved food purchases only. Any abuse of the card can lead to arrest and prosecution and a ban from getting further benefits in the future.

You can also use the Gateway website to do the following:

Overall, our review of the Georgia Gateway website is that it is a very easy to use for services provided by the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services, which is part of the Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS).
